Search for how to make an email ID and every guide walks you through Gmail. The instructions are in Hindi, but the address you end up with is still in English letters: priya.sharma1987@gmail.com. For most of India that is a strange arrangement. People think, talk and type in their own language, and then have to spell their own name in a script they may not use anywhere else.
It does not have to be that way. An email address can be written entirely in Hindi, or Tamil, Bengali, Gujarati and other Indian languages, both the part before the @ and the part after it. For example राज@भारतमेरा.भारत. This post explains how, for yourself (free) and for your business.
Is an email address in Hindi a real, working address?
Yes. Two internet standards make it work. Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) let the domain be in Indian scripts, and India has its own .भारत domain ending in 22 official languages, run by NIXI. Email Address Internationalization (EAI) lets the mailbox name before the @ be in any script. Together these are called Universal Acceptance.
Gmail and Outlook can send mail to such addresses and receive mail from them, so someone with a Gmail account can write to राज@भारतमेरा.भारत and get a reply.
For yourself: a free address in your language
DataMail is a free personal email service from Data Xgen Technologies, the company behind XgenPlus. It gives addresses in 16 languages and 22 scripts, including Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi and Urdu, for example प्रिया@डाटामेल.भारत.
- Download the DataMail app, free on Android and iOS.
- Create your address in the app, in the language you want.
- After that you can also sign in on a computer at
mail.datamail.in.
For your business: your own domain, your team's names in your language
A business wants its own domain, not a shared one. With XgenPlus you can have both parts in your language, for example बिक्री@आपकीकंपनी.भारत (sales at your company), with the English address alongside if you need it.
- Register the domain. Register a .भारत domain (or a regular .in or .com) at godil.in, our NIXI-authorised registrar partner.
- Start the XgenPlus trial. Enter the domain in Hindi and choose an admin mailbox name, also in Hindi if you like, for example भारत. The trial is ₹2 for a month, up to 5 users. Paid plans start at ₹21 a user a month with a GST invoice, and the data stays in India.
- Add the DNS records shown in your dashboard, then create mailboxes for your team in the languages they prefer.
Why not Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or Zoho?

We know of no other provider that offers business email accounts in Devanagari and the other Indian scripts. XgenPlus runs its own mail server and its own mobile app, so the Indian-language address works everywhere: webmail, the phone app and standard mail apps.
Already in use
This is not a pilot. BSNL runs its email on XgenPlus, the Government of Rajasthan gives citizens addresses on the राजस्थान domain, and ICANN's Universal Acceptance Steering Group has published a case study on Data Xgen Technologies. The same technology runs the Russian Cyrillic service почта.рус.
What to keep in mind
- A few older websites and forms still refuse email addresses that are not in English letters. Keep an English address on the same mailbox for those, and XgenPlus lets you have both.
- Look-alike addresses that mix scripts (for example a Cyrillic letter inside an English word) are refused, to protect you from phishing.
